Oral Fidgets
For many students that chew on pencils and other non-food materials in the classroom, they are using this as a strategy to help them sit still...when really they need to move. Consider introducing more movement breaks, but if the chewing is helping them to regulate, consider trialing an oral fidget like oral tubing on the end of their pencil, a chewy tube, or a chewellery necklace or bracelet. Remember when using any oral fidget it is important to supervise its use to ensure the material does not break down and to monitor when a replacement is needed.
